Julie Rumrill is a faculty member in the Department of Earth Science at Southern Connecticut State University and the Department of Math and Science at Gateway Community College in New Haven, Connecticut. She has wide and varied interests in Coastal Oceanography, Glaciology, Climate Change and Natural Disasters. She holds an M.S. in Geology and Geophysics, a B.S. in Environmental Earth Science, and has participated in research and field studies in Kenya, Russia, Samoa, and Greenland. She also holds a degree in business management and was a successful entrepreneur for 10 years.
In addition to her academic, fieldwork, and business experience, Julie is a certified yoga instructor and qualified teacher of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), a scientifically-supported, mind-body medicine program, developed at UMASS Medical School. She is a senior consultant for Team Training Associates, and has taught and led mindfulness practices for the U.S. Coast Guard Leadership Development Center, corporate team-building, public safety professionals, private writing groups, creativity workshops, and proactive mental health for first-year university students. She also works privately with individuals, teaching mindfulness practices as tools to skillfully manage chronic illness, anxiety, and depression. Julie's literary interests include memoir, short-story and fiction. She has recently published the memoir Finding Mary: A Journey of Reclamation. This compelling journey explores the complexities of family relationships, the challenge of finding meaning in tragic events, and the importance of honoring those we've lost.
